Lucien Mignon
1865-1944
Lucien Mignon was born at Chateau-Gontier ( Mayenne) on 13 September 1865.
Mignon started his artistic studies with drawing classes in angers and then went on to study at the Beaux-Arts as the pupil of Gerôme. A sensitive artist, Mignon flourished under his strong friendship with the painter Renoir with whom he painted at Cagnes. Mignon's work was strongly inspired by that of Renoir and reflected his friend's mastery.
In 1920, Mignon was awarded the Prix Breton and from 1910, he had been exhibiting at the Salons des Independants and at Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
He was commissioned to paint the decorations for the Ministry of Public Works, entitled, The Four Seasons.
Mignon said of his works that he wished ' to combine the colours of the Impressionists with the draughtsmanship of Ingres'.
