Daniel Clowes
(1774-1829)
Daniel Clowes lived and worked in Chester all his life and although not much is known about his artistic training, he was primarily a painter of sporting subjects. During his lifetime he painted many famous racehorses, as well as scenes of shooting and hunting in the areas around Anglesey, Fitzwilliam and the Pytchley in Northamptonshire. This painting – a portrait of the racehorse Eclipse, with his trainer Jack Oakley at Newmarket – is based in composition and subject matter, on an earlier painting by George Stubbs.
