Jan Rotius was a North Dutch painter who specialised in portraiture. He painted mostly in West Friesland and there are examples of his work in the Museum of West Friesland. Rootius also painted military subjects.
In 1643, Rootius married Maertie Ambrosius. They had seven children one of whom, Jacob, was a pupil of Jan David de Heem
